Very nice, Walter. I know from last summer how hard it is to get a reasonable shot of just one hummer, but you are showing us how to do it with two. I really like your comp, colours and tones in this shot, and the fact you've caught that male in mid flare (I haven't even seen this species, yet!). Just sorry he's a tad soft back there, and slightly overlapped by the female. As I have said before, you really are in a league of your own with shots of these guys, and you've set such a high standard we expect nothing but the best. I'd have been over the moon to get a shot like this, but I don't think this one is up to your usual excellent standard! John.

Thanks John, not all my shots are 100%, I am the first to admit that! The reason I liked this was because the female was totally ignoring the male's efforts! Sound familiar?!!!! Cropped the one toe off so it doesn't intersect the female's head. looks much better and you don't even notice it's missing!

LOL! I'm sorry missed that, (maybe you could have added the "Humorous" category to the others). In the light of your extra comment, I can now enjoy the all too familiar irony here. Good idea on the toe prune!

Hello Walter. This is certainly a great picture. I found , however, some minor things that bothers me: Knowing your previous work I will expect to see both birds sharp and clear. I don't know what happened here but even with f/20 you didn't get the birds as clear as in your picture Whoa! in which you use the same timing with an f/18. The color of the background is nice but I found the upper left corner (darker) quiet distracting. It is a shame that the left foot of the male is touching (overlapping) the head of the female. Finally, he light is prety good but the flash light direction creates some shadows from the purple feathers to the male body. Sorry to be so picky I can see that pictures like this one are not trivial and this is still a great capture... 2.99 TU ...or I may be just jealous :-) Regards - Andres.

No problem Andres. Constructive critiques always welcome! It's extremely difficult to keep both hummingbirds in sharp focus. The Calliope is the smallest of the North American Hummingbirds, and even when using f/16 -f/32, darn near impossible to keep both birds sharp unless they are very close together or the angle is ideal, none of which the photographer has control of.

Gorgeous shot Wally - great positions and lovely soft tones - only thing keeping this from perfection is the foot and head interference - I'd let that slide for most people, but not you ;-) Beautiful display - John

Very nicely done!!! All I can really critique is that I would personally crop out some of the left side of the frame as there's a lot of dead space in my opinion.

I can not get to one and you grab it by two. As always shot and image quality. The action is extremely difficult to achieve. Very good job. Best regards. Mario

Thank you for your critique Mario. Keep trying...the secret is finding a location where there are lots of hummingbirds, not just one or two an hour!

Wow, impressive catch! Sharpness is very good for the most part, but the most interesting bird, the one in the background, is out of focus, and this does not help the image in my opinion. Nothing even CLOSE to your previous calliope display photography. Yellow goes well with the rest of it, and apart from the focus issues, this shot is excellent!

Sadly I have to agree. He slipped in without me noticing just as I released the shutter. The display only lasts for a second or two then he's gone to chase a new female. I just thought that the female ignoring him was interesting...she didn't even blink!

Thanks for your critique Dena. On the full sized image, the flowers are sharp, I can count the hairs on the greenery.
