Hi, John, I find this image kind of cliche. Yes it's nice has nice colors nice sky, composition is kind of same as in many other pictures. I bet you could have gotten lower point of view and have those people walk up closer to the pier and get more interesting picture and horizon somewhat lower or much higher. As it is is not very interesting, though somewhat beautiful. Cheers!

Yes, John, i like them too, though there are probably ways to take pictures that are interesting too. I think that sunset (or sunrise for that matter) would never stop amaze me, there is something that is magical with that color and light change. Cheers!

I love this composition. The back-lit couple balanced by the back-lit pier, the great arrangement of cloud. However, there are a few things not to like. First, the horizon isn't level. You can see this both in the horizon and the sea/sand interface. Next, the cloud in the upper right looks a bit oversaturated to me. And last, there is some odd large-scale structure in the portion of the sky that is just red haze. Not sure where that comes from. It doesn't look like sun rays, but may be just that.

John,
What can I say... it's a stunning shot, beautiful colours and great composition. I'm not sure if the picture would have more of a story if there was only one person walking on the beach... Fabian

It truly is a beautiful photo John. The colors in the sky are so lovely and I love the cloud pattern as well. Nice composition overall and I also love the inclusion of the two figures to the left of the photo. There is a bit of a tip in the horizon line but really a minor detail to such a lovely shot. Well done. Donna

Hi John, this is so close to 3TU for me. The colours in the sky are amazing and the composition was well chosen. The two figures to the left add a lot to the scene as you had surmised and it was a good choice going with this version. As mentioned, I wish there was more light coming through the pier too. The few technical issues that remain have already been pointed out and discussed, so no need for me to repeat. I think this is an excellent choice for contre jour. Take care, Rob.

Nice sunset John, its not outstanding among sunsets but nice enough, i think an interesting perspective would be to get down lower and closer to the pier to get more of the cross members set against the setting sun, the sky is nice and clear and the pier is very sharp

Hi Ian - that's almost exactly what i was going to aim for, but Bob and i got to the pier a little late for catching the sun! I got a couple of shots of the end of it silhouetted against the sun, but without people there it wasn't so interesting - didn't have time to try other positions this evening - good idea though! John

I think this is a lovely, beautiful photo - I looked at both your version and Robin's and liked both versions a lot. The angle you took this is really great..it gives dimension and let's you see the journey of the people walking...and the lone person on the pier is a great added touch! Good placement! :-) I would like to have seen a version with bit more of the pier...and angled more to include more beach to the right...as an alternative view.

Hey John. Good counterpoint of the two people heading toward the pier on the right. I don't know, this doesn't have any 'pop' for me and it is not such an inspiring contre-jour image in my mind (of course, I've had mine up for 26 hours and can't barely get scavenger hunt participants to critique it, LOL). I would have liked to have seen the edge of the sun at least before it went below the horizon. The leftmost clouds have a nice pattern but they are mired in gray where not warm in tone. Of course, picky me also sees that the horizon is leaning slightly down to the left and it looks even more tilted where the dark shoreline meets the lighter ocean. I hope you don't mind, but I am going to mess with this in Photoshop. Ooops. one last thing, I am seeing a very faint, but large circular outline in the center of the sky, just to the right of the elliptical clouds on the left side. Do you or anyone else see it? :)Robin

I'm going to blame all the defects on my laptop ;-) I set the horizon straight, but obviously didn't do as good a job as I should have! I did some work on the sky towards the top and the right side and you're seeing traces of that i should have hidden better - you're a tough audience Robin! (but I'm enjoying the categories you've chosen!) John

At the risk of being a bigger pain, I found the horizon to be off by about .6 but after rotating, the shoreline by the couple was off approx. .1 the opposite way! here is the link to what I messed with including shadow/highlights, increasing the blacks & did some levels adjustment, used the marquee tool to select just the sky area and then did some curves adjustment there. Then for the heck of it, I added more sharpening giving distinct edges but possibly slight halos. (I didn't do any feathering to clean up the line of the horizon after the marquee selection). nice! there's a line showing at the water horizon but otherwise I love this version - and .6 degrees is what I rotated it..... maybe it was straight to start with? I really need a vacation ;-)

Glad you like it. That's the line I mentioned from the selection that I did not feather (because I am lousy at it!). Is this trip all work related? :)R

I don't think you overdid it with the colors of the sunset. I do see some unusual "patches" in the sky near the middle of the frame on the right side. I can't convince myself that they are spots where you may have burned the sky, but it does look a little funny. It is a somewhat conventional sunset scene that was performed well. How could it be better? The couple holding hands or kissing would add a little more romanticism to the shot. Maybe you could have set a timer and Bob and you could have been the human subjects in the photo, assuming Bob was there of course?

as long as you're not suggesting Bob and I be holding hands or kissing... an interesting suggestion though and one I didn't think of - we were driving around south of this pier area and with traffic managed to get back to the beach with literally seconds to spare - I only got a few shots of the sun, and I was feeling too hectic to be properly creative for a shot of the two of us! You're right about the patches - I didn't notice them but I'll have to redo this before I'm satisfied - I so miss my larger and better monitor when I'm traveling - John

John... is hard to say something in fron of so many beauty... is flawless, colors and tones are simply perfect. Silhouettes are sharp. I love this texture of clouds in sky when reflect more or less light. Color of sea is fantastic, Same as composition, with this couple in left, balancing the image. It seems simple, but has a lot of details, all those lines crossing in right, the quantity of colors and tones with diferent forms in sky, People walking, sand, sea, waves... And u balanced and handled in a perfect way. A Great one, for feel proud of it. My best regards for u. -Fernando-

Regarding technique, there is a slight slope down to the left, but other aspects look just right. Exposure, always difficult in sun-centric photos, is just right to my eyes. Just right in that the sky is revealed well, there is some detail in the water, and the pier and people are in silhouette. One of the things I like most about it is its almost monochromatic nature. These chances are rare when shooting in color, so I am always on the lookout for scenes that don't tax the RGB in my sensor.

Hi Del - as I mentioned to Eugene, I think the water line is straight, but the shoreline was not level and I didn't fix it to be level - maybe I should have tried... glad you liked the rest of it! thanks for looking - John

Shorelines and water surfaces can be tricky. What amazes me is how little a tilt is noticeable, and how my tilt is consistent in amount and direction.

Beautiful sky, well captured John, with the figures entering into the scene. But the horizon is sloping gently down on the left side of the frame (of course, an easy fix). Nicely seen and great catch on the sky. Regards.

Hi Eugene! I set the horizon based on the water line but the line in front is the shoreline and that's not exactly level but in reality that's the way it was! might have been better to fix them both but I decided to leave the front one as it was - thanks for looking! John

More a comment on what we are doing than a critique, John, so it goes here. Some of us are bound up in details of category. Both in this scavenger hunt and in photoSIG in general, there is a tendency to place adherence to principle above esthetic value. This photo is a good example. You will probably get critiques on the extent of adherence to a pure definition of contre jour (maybe not, now), and if not the basis of the critique it will get a mention. The sun is not visible here, probably below the horizon, so purists might be offended. But, adhering to the principle results in a vastly different photo. I think I can envision that photo, and it will not achieve the mood this one does. Nice work here.

Del, I understand exactly what you are saying and I kind of grappled with this issue and hope that most members would agree that in the purist's sense seeing the light source in the composition and shooting into it is the purist form of contre-jour but agree also agree that shooting into the light source like this would hopefully be acceptable to the members as well. Especially since that is what I will probably do with my entry........

I also agree with you - I had two alternative shots, one with the pier backlit by the setting sun shot with a 800mm lens.... dramatic, but I liked the feel of this one much better - it's really hard choosing one shot for these hunt categories! John
