Very nice stop action clarity on an interesting and beautiful bird.

Was he or she diving, it looks like it was from this view point?

hi joyia, as I have written to you I have deleted my crit (with excuse of yours) that I have written this shot because lots of messages have been written under my crit. even I didnt wanted to read of them.I want to have good friendship with photosig art friends and spend a nice times with sharing our art works. not to fight with each other but to motivate each other and give possitive feelings to encourage better art works. Now I am giving my views for your bird shot. yes it is well captured and well composed wild bird shot . especially open wings diagonal actions well done. blue sky and the dark color of bird created nice contrast. may be sharpness would be better. regards tugba

With due respect.

I find that my very high end expensive LCD shows the image is sharp except for the right lower wing feathers and would and could be expected of a bird in flight, however Joyia there are some flaws. The outline from the bird and sky appear too over worked and the post work contrast is too strong. I think if you had done less to the image it would have been much stronger. It's not flawed to the point you could not correct it, it is an interesting frame balanced shot. Left me wondering what the original looked like though. These are hard shots at best.

Cheers

We have a tight crop of a Kite. This is a subject well known to this member and a bird photographed by other members of this site.

The lighting is coming from the top and from the bird's left. We know this by the shadow cast on the bird's right wing. It is a bright day which means that there is a wide latitude of light from the bright to shadows. A flying bird doesn't lend itself to HDR so you either need to expose for the highlights or the shadows. Joyia, you made the correct choice exposing for the highlights. Unfortunately, there was too much noise in the shadow areas and this is brought out by your processing and probably looks even worse that the original file. The lesson from this shot, is bright harsh light is not the best time to take flying birds from below because of the shadow issues unless they are flying low and can catch some reflected light off the ground.

Evaluating sharpness, the noise adds some intrinsic softness to the shot, but even the eye has the appearance of being soft and yet trying to appear sharp from processing. It didn't work.

Finally, and this may certainly be a problem with people's monitors or in their rush to hand out their ratings, didn't really inspect the photo that well...... there are some blues "steps" dropping down from the upper right edge to the middle of the bottom edge of the photo. It appears you were trying to do something about the sky and created this artifact.

Yes, it was a potentially good moment of a bird in flight, but there are a lot of problems with the photo.

Interesting.... I did mark two critiques unhelpful, because I think they were inaccurate. I was in a discussion with Hans, but actually did not mark his critique unhelpful, because I agree with what he said in the body of the critique, although I do disagree with the rating. And now he has marked my critique unhelpful. Please explain your action Hans.

I have changed my rating to "no opinion" as directed by Sheena. I'm not quite happy being told what my rating should be, but that's how it is, so be it. Cheers, Hans

I doubt that Sheena told you how to rate a critique. She told you to observe the photoSIG guidelines and definitions regarding critique rating, as she always does in cases like this. So don't accuse photoSIG admins of dictating critique ratings; we don't do that, we just require that all users obey the guidelines.

Hans how could you suggest this is an unhelpful critique by photoSIG standards?

I have reread the rules and I agree that I could not rate the critique unhelpful although I disagree in the 2TD rating. But since the rating is not part of being helpful or unhelpful I should not have rated the critique unhelpful. My sense of fairness was probably stressed a bit here, but rules are rules ;) Cheers, Hans

Thanks dear David for your kind interest in my shot .. I agree with you on all accounts .. I take your rating with a smile.. Yes one TD for the oppinon which I honor most .. and one TD I take as your great expectation with me to work hard and improve.. that is ok for me .. light is from up and I got it well with shadows and highlight .. but could not process it well .. or .. may be I have not that high end gaget to make it right .. I am so gald you came by that is a pleasure as I love to have your thought Red or Greens. :) best of regards.. JOYIA

I guess some members think you would be upset with red thumbs, but I imagine you wold be more upset if people were misinforming you. Do you not agree that critiques that hide the true facts are unhelpful critiques?

I know just one thing that author job is to post and wait for the opinion of wonderful critiques.. I do know every one has its own prespecitve and taste.. well it is true some have wonderful equipment to view it and some like me have not so good things to watch the shot .. I as author have to respect what comes from the wonderful ones.. as what ever we talk here is seen and heard by the world.. it is not just our work but our person involed in it on a international fourm.. so there are so many judges out there to secketch our image in their thoughts.. This is only I know dear David.. best of regards.. JOYIA

Joyia, this is not about taste or perspective this is about the accuracy of photographic assessment. If one says a photograph is sharp when clearly it is not, how can that be helpful to the photographer?

You are right dear Sheena .. it happens like that and it is due to many reasons .. but as author I have to accept it not to pose my prespective upon them .. some get one thing very sharp and some get the same thing too soft.. some like saturated colors that is by taste.. and some like mute colors.. that goes with the tones as well.. some like more sharping and some don't .. so every one got their own prespective.. and author have to do nothing with that .. if I have to post a shot .. I can't tell any one what to do about it ... it is very good learning place. not just learning but making friends who have the same passion . we must not get any thing to heart if some one got its opinion which some time we don't think is up to par.. Well I humbly stand with the words .. as I got my prespective to be part of this wonderful cummunity.. I have not taken it for granted at all.. I love to stay and learn and to help others if I could ..you know I am not good photographer , but a lil good critique writter though ..I do like all the critique must be respected what ever they come with .. as it is a critique site we must not discourge the critiques in my hummgle oppinion .. all the best regards.. JOYIA

Again Joyia, I am not talking about perspective or personal taste as in who likes a photo being soft or sharp, or saturated colours. I am talking about statements of fact that are inaccurate. As in, this photo is sharp, when clearly it is not. How can that be helpful?

And please do not suggest that I would discourage anyone from writing critiques, nothing could be further from the truth. But what all of us must do is encourage people to write honest accurate critiques. Otherwise we may as well go back to version one where ****Nice___shot___please___see___mine**** ruled the day.

Actually, it is the bright light from above which creates the noise in the shadow areas of the wing, so the lighting really doesn't play well in this photo.

Joyia my friend, I agree with Edwin, there is a lot of noise in the pic, no doubt due to using a lot of contrast to try to bring the colours out and increase sharpness. The shot itself is really a good catch, not easy with these fast flying birds.. I like the pic, but not so much the PP... keep at it..

best regards Dave

Amazing picture! Good shot, good catch too. I can see some digital noise though, and i believe the postprocessing shows up a bit too much. Even so, great picture. One suggestion maybe: I think this would even work with the bird as a silhouette, black on blue.

Hi Joyia,

Great catch and I like the wing position and the view of the head between the wings. The quality could be better with better controlled noise and it looks a bit "digital" and maybe cropped too much with relatively strong sharpening on the bird.

PS: I looked at this again this evening and I think a rating of 1TU is more accurate.

Cheers, Hans

A wonderful pose of the black kite dear Joyia, you have good sharpness and nicely done details on the plumage. Unfortunately, the noises are really stronly showing up on the bird. Seems that you still have a little trouble managing your post processing.

Cheers......Edwin
